Carey Awards in 2005, 2006, 2007, 2008 [Trophy], 2009) is a tertiary care facility for several Upper Midwestern states. As Medical Director, Hem/Onc Clinic (2002-2006; 2015 to present), I lead efforts to reorganize the clinic, hire and train new personnel, and design a new, 18 chair Chemotherapy Infusion Center. RESEARCH: Federally funded (VA, NIH), basic, translational and clinical research. We defined the structural specificity of heparan sulfates (HS) that helps form the stem cell “niche.” Elucidated the role of HS in the pathogenesis of Hurler’s syndrome. Our strategy to ameliorate this abnormality using human stem cells is advancing to clinical trials. We described ligand-receptor interactions involving HS that promote malignant growth, and are developing novel peptides to disrupt these using drug discovery approaches. Clinical research: focused on improving cancer outcomes based on molecular and cellular mechanisms. Served as national Study Chair for a clinical trial in MDS. More recently: We identified SNPs predictive of chemotherapy response and toxicity in lung cancer; Based on our pre-clinical findings, I am leading a national clinical trial to improve outcomes in lung cancer by antagonizing the pro-angiogenic and growth-promoting activity of opioids, through the NCI-sponsored Cooperative Group ALLIANCE. LEADERSHIP: Member, Symptom Management and Quality of Life (QoL) Steering Committee, National Cancer Institute, NIH; Member, Leukemia Committee and Symptom Intervention & QoL Committee (ALLIANCE). At the VA: institutional co-Principal Investigator for ALLIANCE. TEACHING & MENTORING: Passionate about bedside teaching, scientific mentoring.
